Ireland is an island located in the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean and is part of Europe. It spans 68,883 square kilometers of land and 1,390 square kilometers of water and is bordered by the UK. Ireland is the 121st largest nation in the world and located at a latitude of 51.5 to 55.5 degrees north and longitude of 5.5 to 10.5 degrees west. Two large mountain systems, the Caledonian and Armorican, extend through the country. The majority of the Ireland’s central area is lowland, with glacial remains hinting at an ice-covered landscape in the past. The longest of the many rivers is dubbed the River Shannon. The country has a population of 4.892 million (2013) (Worldmark Encyclopedia of Nations).
By comparison, the US has a population of 318.9 million (2014), nearly 80 times larger than Ireland’s. The United States spans a whopping 9.857 million square kilometers of land and is obviously a much larger country. It is located in the Pacific Ocean and extends south to the Atlantic on account of southern islands. While Ireland is part of Europe, the US is the largest country in North America and is to the west of Ireland.
